I absolutely love this training entity that challenges the following important skills: obstacle focus combined with movement distraction. In this exercise, I used a tunnel and a jump.
Verbal cues for the obstacles as well as discrimination play a big role in these exercises. The challenge is suitable for both inexperienced and experienced dogs because you can add challenge infinitely by adding your own speed and movement.
The challenge consists of five small exercises and you only need:
A short tunnel
A long tunnel
A wing (marked with an X on the course map)
A jump
Tips for training
Do the exercises in the same order as on the video:
Red numbers. After the tunnel reward to the side (this adds challenge for the next exercise).
Green numbers: In addition to locking the tunnel, the dog needs to master locking onto the jump in spite of handler movement. By rewarding the red exercise to the side, it encourages the dog to spread the line after the tunnel, so a cue for turning from the tunnel is needed.
Blue numbers: Layering (if needed, reward the dog after the second tunnel in case the dog looks at the jump in between the tunnels or if he doesn’t run fast enough from one tunnel to the other).
Yellow numbers: Locking the jump in between the tunnels, and locking the tunnel after the jump (if the dog’s handler focus is stronger than his obstacle focus, the dog can easily pass the jump or the tunnel). Try to help as little as possible with your movement and arms.
Brown numbers: Come to hand, passing the tunnel (Note! If the dog’s handler focus is stronger than his obstacle focus, avoid reinforcing the skill of passing obstacles too much).
Extra challenge:
Mix blue, yellow and brown numbers and perform them one after the other.
Enjoy training :)
