Training challenge by Petra Malin - Tunnel-jump discrimination
November's training challenge is all about tunnel-jump discrimination! Does your dog master it? Now you can find out and if he doesn’t, this is a wonderful exercise for training it. It has been designed by Petra Malin, an agility coach and Team AgiNotes member.
Dark circles: The goal here is to get the dog to take jump 2, approaching it between the tunnel and the jump. The handler should not be placed in-between the obstacles. Remember to take the dog with you early from jump 1 and give him the jump cue. You can do a blind cross to jump 2, or you can do a tandem turn to jump 3. The purpose is for the handler to be courageous in handling and move away from jump 2 in time to give space for the dog.
Remember to train both sides.
If the exercise is too hard, you can make it easier by adding distance and moving jump 2 further away from the tunnel. After that, you can gradually move it closer.
If, on the other hand, the exercise is too easy, you can move jump 2 closer to the tunnel to really test the limits of your dog’s discrimination skills!
Also train so that you handle the sequence from between the tunnel and jump 2.
White circles: Add speed but handle jump 6 as in the previous exercise.
