Becky Sinclair IFCS World Agility Championships - Making dreams come true - competing abroad
IFCS stands for International Federation of Cynological Sports. They organise World Agility Championships that include four classes: Agility, Jumping, Snooker and Gamblers. The latest event was 10.-14.4.2019 in Netherlands. But what was the event like? We asked Becky Sinclair who represented Team Great Britain with her border collie Who.
“One of my big dreams has always been to compete abroad so IFCS was a dream come true! I was so excited to be able to compete at an international event. The event itself was everything I hoped it would be - great venue, excellent judges that gave us good courses and an amazing atmosphere.”
Courses offered challenge and nice lines
Becky describes the courses as fast and challenging. “They tested independence, commitment, obstacle discrimination and accuracy. I think the courses reflected the way most of us like to do agility - courses that challenge lots of skills but still flow and give the dog nice lines.”
Peter Smit’s individual agility was Becky’s favorite: “It was really cleverly designed and was so much fun to run.”
Russian and Italian teams made the biggest impression
When asked who, or what teams made an impression on Becky, she mentions the Russian and Italian teams: “The Russian team was incredible, they had so many great runs! Their dogs were so skilled with great speed and independence. Especially E. Krasnopevtsev with Brittny was exceptional. The Italian team was also interesting for me. They had three Mental Coaches and a Fitness Coach on their team - they were very focused and seemed to be very supportive of each other.”
Ok, check the medal count . The Russians really did something right!
Tips for attending IFCS World Agility Championships
Becky describes the event as one of the best experiences she has had so far: “The opportunity to compete against teams from all over the world, on courses that were fast but still needed skills to negotiate. It was amazing to be able to represent my country and compete as part of Team Great Britain!” She recommends IFCS for anyone that wants to compete at an international competition with the atmosphere and the team spirit that goes alongside it.
Here are some tips Becky listed for all those who want to go and compete in IFCS:
It’s not cheap to travel and compete abroad! We had some help as a team from some team sponsors but otherwise I funded my trip myself (with the help of my amazing boyfriend), so it’s something you need to consider before trying out!
Your dog needs to have excellent skills and reliable contacts!
The days are LONG! We were warned beforehand that the days would be long but nothing really prepares you for it! You need some stamina.
It’s also quite stressful at times and a bit emotional! You need to know how to manage your emotions.
My biggest tip would be to embrace the experience as much as possible- really get involved and make the most of it!
